POSITION GOAL

To perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning ranging in size from one (1) to eight hundred (800) tons, commercial refrigeration and freezers, water coolers and control systems in a responsible and accurate manner.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below:
  • Review work orders and job sites to determine materials and procedural requirements.
  • Requisition or special order parts and materials needed to effect repairs.
  • Work alone to solve current problems by: dismantling, inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and reassembling all sizes of air conditioning units and components, water coolers, freezers, refrigerators, ice machines, milk coolers, compressors, water pumps, condensers, motors, etc. using knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipe fitting, and electricity.
  • Utilize energy management techniques to: diagnose electrical, mechanical, and pressure malfunctions using diagnostic aids, such as voltage, amperage and ohm meters, temperature tester, compound gauges, air flow meters, leak detectors, hand tools, etc.
  • Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units, using electrician's hand tools and test equipment.
  • Refer to service manuals, schematics, diagrams, and other aids to assist in diagnosing malfunctions.
  • Advise users of systems about proper operation and provide suggestions to enhance results.
  • Test all repaired equipment for proper operation.
  • Receive and complete emergency calls dispatched over the radio.
  • Be responsible for the work of apprentices and laborers as assigned.
  • Inform supervisor of needed supplies.
  • Participate, successfully, in the training programs offered to increase the individual's skill and proficiency related to the assignments.
  • Operate School Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle.
  • Complete all projects in a competent workmanlike manner and ensure proper recording of time and materials.
  • Perform all duties which require extensive physical effort such as climbing, lifting over 60 pounds, pulling, etc.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, manager, director or designee.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Experiece Six (6) years of recent professionally paid experience in the air conditioning/refrigeration field.
  • Must possess a current Broward County's, or State of Florida, Certificate of Competency as either a Specialty Air Conditioning Technician, Class "A" or as a Refrigeration Technician, Class "A€ or as a Mechanical Journeyman.
  • Able to read blueprints, technical data and sketches; prepare estimates of materials from such information. Ability to assume responsibility and instruct other mechanics (including apprentices) in the proper procedures to accomplish repairs.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical and Air conditioning circuits.
  • Extensive knowledge of all phases of air conditioning and refrigeration repairs to include proper procedures of the trade.
  • Knowledge of computer-activated energy controls.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Able to work well with others.
  • Must have ability to assume responsibility and effect repairs without assistance.
  • Must provide own hand tools.
  • Willing to answer emergency calls at all hours, including off hours.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver's license.
  • This position will include pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Broward County School District's Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Apprenticeship Program.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.

SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose

Majority of contact is with employees within the Maintenance and Operations Department and Transportation Services utilizing mechanical skills to repair and maintain Broward County School Board vehicles and ensure every part of a vehicle system is performing correctly.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
