POSITION GOAL

To perform skilled labor engaged in the repair and maintenance of door and window hardware, panic devices, and various types of locks and safes in a responsible and accurate manner.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Lock and Hardware Mechanic - Journeyman shall carry out the essential performance responsibilities listed below

  • Review work orders and job sites to determine material and procedural requirements.
  • Requisition and/or special order parts and materials needed to effect repairs.
  • Install, replace and repair various types of security devices such as key-in-knob sets, dead bolts, combination, electronic closing and locking devices, etc. using coding machines, otoscope, drills, saws, pin kits, clippers, lock picks, tension wrenches, micrometers, calipers and other hand tools and equipment.
  • Duplicate keys and cut new keys using duplicator and code machines.
  • Remove, repair and install door and window hardware, such as panic bars and other exit devices, door knobs, hydraulic closures, awning, jalousie and sliding window fixtures, electronic closing and locking devices, etc.
  • Plan and implement entire keying systems for school and office complexes.
  • Remove doors and windows to effect installations and repairs, including performing heavy physical tasks such as cutting steel and concrete, lifting doors off and on to hinges, drilling through metal, etc.
  • Open safes, vaults and doors which do not have normal key or combination access.
  • Be responsible for the work of apprentices and laborers as assigned.
  • Inform supervisor of needed supplies.
  • Participate, successfully, in the training programs offered to increase the individual's skill and proficiency related to the assignments.
  • Operate School Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle.
  • Complete all projects in a competent workmanlike manner and ensure proper recording of time and materials.
  • Perform all duties which require extensive physical effort such as climbing, lifting over 60 pounds, pulling, etc.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, manager, director or designee.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of current experience in common mechanical and electrical lock systems and door and window hardware.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of all types of locks and locking devices.
  • Must be able to open locked devices and effect repairs to locking systems.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of schematic and technical publications and be able to set in accordance with manufacturers' instructions.
  • Must be able to work alone, but possess the ability to impart knowledge to other mechanics or helpers.
  • Must be able to repair all types of window hardware, and on occasion fabricate nonexistent parts.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Able to work well with others.
  • Must provide own hand tools.
  • Must have ability to assume responsibility and effect repairs/complete tasks without assistance. Willing to answer emergency calls at all hours, including off hours.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.
  • This position will include pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
