POSITION GOAL

To perform skilled work in all types of body and paint repair, including the use of sheet metal, fiberglass, and related materials; to repair damage to all Broward County School Board owned vehicles in a responsible and accurate manner.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Paint & Body Mechanic (Journey person), shall carry out the essential performance responsibilities listed below:

• Review work orders and view damaged areas of vehicles to determine requirements; establish work schedules including parts and needed for repairs to be completed on time, while giving buses top priority.

• Remove outside mirrors, lights, bumpers, and other protuberances from vehicles in order to replace and complete repairs.

• Reshape body surface to proper contour using various techniques and tools such as stretching metal with power tools, pounding metal with mallets, cutting and welding with gas and electric torches, grinding and sanding surfaces by hand or with power tools, etc.

• Remove and replace body sections of vehicles with new preformed sections such as hoods and fenders.

• Mix fiberglass or other body fillers with hardening creams and contour surfaces for painting.

• Prepare sections or complete vehicle for spray painting by covering surfaces not to be painted with paper and tape.

• Select and mix proper amounts of ingredients with paint and clean equipment after use.

• Perform various vehicle repairs involving replacing mirrors, windshields, bumpers, lights as well as, changing or repairing window mechanisms or changing motors in lifts for the handicapped, in addition to disassembling and repairing cylinders.

• Operate School Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle. Complete all projects in a competent manner and ensure proper recording of time and materials.

• Perform all duties which may require extensive physical effort such as climbing, lifting, pulling, etc.

• Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.

• Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.

• Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of successful experience in body repair or painting.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class B with endorsement(s) within the first year of employment.
  • Employees must maintain the CDL class B with endorsement(s) throughout employment in the Paint & Body Mechanic (Journey person) classification as a condition of continuous employment.
  • Ability to make and work from sketches, estimate materials, supplies, and costs.
  • Possess considerable knowledge of automotive glass proper use, and sanding and painting of vehicle.
  • Ability to do various types of welding.
  • Knowledge of all phases of body repairs and painting including standard practices, methods, and tools of the trade.
  • Ability to assume responsibility, as needed.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Provide own hand tools of associated with the trade.
  • Valid Florida driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Computer skills as required for the position.
  • This position will include preemployment drug and alcohol testing.

Interact with employees within the Maintenance & Operations Department and Student Transportation & Fleet Services, utilizing skills to repair and maintain Broward County School Board vehicles and ensure every part of a vehicle system is performing correctly.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.
