POSITION GOAL

To perform skilled work in the preparation and application of paint and coatings by brush, spray, or roller to buildings, furniture and equipment in a responsible and accurate manner.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Painter - Journeyman shall carry out the essential performance responsibilities listed below.

  •  Work as an individual or as part of the crew; receive daily work assignments for painting and/or glazing.
  • Review work orders and job sites, in conjunction with supervision, to determine the material and procedural requirements. Read and understand directions, instructions and specifications for use of specialty paint products and equipment.
  • Prepare the job site for efficient and safe working conditions, such as placing protective coverings over floors and furniture, moving obstacles from the work area, placing barricades around the work site, notifying school officials, setting up scaffolding, placing ladders, etc.
  • Prepare surfaces to be painted by washing, pressure cleaning, scraping, sanding, caulking, stripping, and patching. • Clean and properly care for brushes, ladders, rollers, and power equipment that he/she uses.
  • Apply primer and paint to surfaces with brushes, rollers and spray equipment.
  • Clean, lubricate and adjust tools and equipment to maintain them in a clean and operable condition.
  • Restore work areas after completion of projects. Inform supervisor of needed supplies.
  • Be responsible for the work of apprentices and laborers as assigned.
  • Perform any assigned work when work in the current job assignment is not available.
  • Participate, successfully, in the training programs offered to increase the individual's skill and proficiency related to the assignment.
  • Operate School Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle.
  • Complete all projects in a competent workmanlike manner and ensure proper recording of item and materials.
  • Perform all duties which require extensive physical effort, such as climbing, lifting of over 25 up to 60 pounds, pulling, etc. Must be able to work at high altitude from extension ladders, lifts, scaffold and from roofs.
  • Review current developments, literature, and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Manager, Director or designee.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Satisfactory completion of the Broward County School District's Painters' Apprenticeship Program.
  • Ability to read blueprints; estimate materials, supplies, and costs.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and follow both oral and written instructions. Considerable knowledge of all phases of painting including preparation of paint products, standard practices and methods, and tools of the trade.
  • Ability to caulk and glaze, mix and match painting surfaces.
  • Ability to climb and work from scaffolding, staging, ladders, platforms and work along edges of high buildings; must have the ability to operate hi-lifts and boom trucks.
  • Must have knowledge of waterproofing process for buildings.
  • Must have the ability to do some line marking and sign work.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Must have ability to assume responsibility and complete tasks without assistance. Willing to answer emergency calls at all hours, including off hours.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver's license. This position will include pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
  • Computer skills as required for the position.

OR

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Skilled painter with five (5) years of employed professionally paid recent work experience.
  • Ability to read blueprints; estimate materials, supplies, and costs.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and follow both oral and written instructions. Considerable knowledge of all phases of painting including preparation of paint products, standard practices and methods, and tools of the trade.
  • Ability to caulk and glaze, mix and match painting surfaces.
  • Ability to climb and work from scaffolding, staging, ladders, platforms and work along edges of high buildings; must have the ability to operate hi-lifts and boom trucks.
  • Must have knowledge of waterproofing process for buildings.
  • Must have the ability to do some line marking and sign work.
