POSITION GOAL

Responsible for performing skilled work in the maintenance, repair and new installations of such items as water, sewer lines, drainage, water closets, sinks, showers, and stoppages in utility systems in accordance with the building codes in a safe, responsible and accurate manner

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Plumber- Journeyperson shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below.

  • Position responsibilities require the ability to work flexible hours to respond to emergencies and perform essential services as required.
  • Review work orders and inspect job sites to determine material and procedural requirements.
  • Prepare and submit requisitions for parts and supplies needed to complete repair work.
  • Locate sewer lines, drains, septic tanks, grease tanks, gas lines, using blueprints as necessary.
  • Evaluate the condition of existing plumbing systems and accurately record location of underground systems.
  • Perform excavation tasks to expose piping and plumbing fixtures requiring repairs or replacement. Break and remove concrete with jack hammer, street saws, sledge hammer or other hand and power tools; dig holes and trenches; remove rocks, dirt and debris.
  • Dismantle and reassemble water and gas piping systems, as necessary, to effect repairs, using a variety of tools such as acetylene torches, snap cutters, hack saws, tubing cutter, pipe wrenches, drills, pipe threading machines, etc.
  • Provide maintenance and repair of sanitary sewage systems. Correct sewer line stoppages by using proper size cutting head on sewer machine line and feeding line into drains; activate machine; withdraw line from drains manually after completion. 
  • Replace or repair plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, water closets, water heaters, drinking fountains, etc.
  • Inform immediate supervisor or designee of material and supplies needed to complete repairs and maintenance.
  • Oversee the work performed by apprentices and laborers.
  • Operate district-owned vehicles in a safe manner and maintain supplies and equipment in the vehicles.
  • Complete assigned repair and maintenance projects in a timely manner. Maintain documentation of time spent on assignment and materials used.
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • Participate in the training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, manager, director or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • .Satisfactory completion of a Florida Department of Education registered Plumber Apprenticeship Program,

OR

  • Six (6) years, within the last eight (8) years, of professional plumbing experience, AND Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.

Valid Florida Certificate of Competency as a journeyperson in the plumbing trade. 
AND

  • Certification may be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment in the position. 
  • Prior experience interpreting blueprints to map layout for pipes, drainage systems and other plumbing materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as direct other mechanics assigned to specific projects. Extensive Knowledge of plumbing practices in laying out and installing water and other pipe systems and fixtures, plumbing fixtures, material and tools, and their suitability for different types of work and application.
  • Knowledge of regulations regarding sanitary plumbing system installations. Possession of required hand tools. 
  • Effective communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a team-based environment. Valid Florida driver's license. 
  • Computer skills as required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bilingual skills.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Prior customer service experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience in building trades.
