TIRE REPAIRPERSON

POSITION GOAL
To perform semi-skilled work in the using power tools in the repair and replacement of tires on buses, trucks, cars, vans, and heavy tire equipment in a responsible an accuarte manner.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Tire Repairperson, shall carry out the essential performance responsibilities listed below:
- Remove tires and wheels from vehicles using hand tools such as tire irons, impact wrenches, etc.
- Place tire and rim on machine to separate tire from rim.
- Inspect all areas of tires and tubes to determine proper repair procedure including measuring tread and discarding tires that are not within standards.
- Repair tires and tubes determined to be safe and usable.
- Seal puncture and inspect tire casing for defects, such as holes and tears.
- Glue tire patch over rupture using rubber cement or seal patch to tube using hot vulcanizing plate.
- Check rims for damage, clean lock rings to ensure proper fit and place/replace new and repaired tires on rims.
- Transport tires to safety cage and inflate tires to proper air pressure; as well as, to balance wheel and hammer weights onto rim appropriately.
- Install tires on vehicles.
- Perform periodic tire inventories, as required.
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area.
- Operate School Board owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle.
- Indicate all completed projects by recording and materials.
- Perform all duties which may require extensive physical effort such as climbing, lifting, pulling, etc.
- Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of the School Board of Broward County, Florida.
- Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to the job responsibilities.
- Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
- Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
- Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned immediate supervisor, or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of one (1) year of successful experience as a semi-skilled mechanic in replacing automotive or other vehicular tires.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class B with endorsement(s) within the first year of employment.
- Employees must maintain the CDL class B with endorsement(s) throughout employment in the Paint & Body Mechanic (Journey person) classification as a condition of continuous employment.
- Working knowledge of proper tire replacement procedures with emphasis on proper tools and air pressures.
- Able to identify tire sizes and the proper tire size for each type of vehicle.
- Able to perform heavy lifting and on occasion be able to change tires without assistance.
- Able to follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Able to work well with others.
- Valid Florida driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Computer skills as required for the position.
- This position will include pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
- Valid Florida Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) with endorsement(s).
- Bilingual skills.
SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose
Interact with employees within the Maintenance & Operations Department and Student Transportation & Fleet Services, utilizing skills to repair and maintain Broward County School Board vehicles and ensure every part of a vehicle system is performing correctly.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
