POSITION GOAL

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Yardperson shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below.

• Work directly under the Head Facilities Serviceperson, Principal, Administrator or designee.

• Maintain the grounds, passage-ways, parking lots, athletic fields including trash collections.

• Cut and edge the grass as scheduled. This would include weekly mowing during the heavy growing season, and during other periods, once every ten days or two weeks

• Ensure the parking lots and outside walks are policed daily. Pick up and dispose of paper, bottles, cans, stones, twigs, leaves, and other debris from yards, walkways, parking lots, etc.

• Keep fence lines trimmed and free from paper and trash. Use power and hand tools to trim bushes, hedges and trees.

• Maintain equipment in a satisfactory condition by sharpening blades, changing oil and filters, lubricating parts properly, cleaning, as necessary, and storing them safely and securely.

• Clean, adjust and lubricate components of the sprinkler system, such as pumps and sprinkler heads; excavate, remove and replace piping.

• Plant flowers, bushes, trees and other items, as directed.

 • Inform supervisor of needed supplies. Recognize building equipment, mechanical equipment and structural problems which require servicing or maintenance. Inform immediate supervisor of needs or call in maintenance work orders as directed by facility administrator.

• Practice safety continuously and ensure that a safe working area exists. • Operate School Board-owned vehicle in a safe manner and assume responsibility for all supplies and equipment on the vehicle.

• Complete all projects in a competent manner and ensure proper recording of time and materials.

• Perform all duties which require extensive physical effort, such as climbing, lifting, pulling, etc., which requires the physical ability to lift, on average, up to fifty-five (55) pounds.

• Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.

• Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.

• Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.

• Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.

 • Follow federal and state, as well as School Board policies.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program. 1 Yardperson (cont.) SBBC: NN-055 • Six (6) months of experience in related work within or outside the Broward County School District.
  •  • Physical ability to work outside in hot weather.
  • • Some knowledge of shrubs and trees.
  • • Ability to identify different types of grass and know the care required for each; such as mowing, fertilizing, and treatment for insects.
  • • Ability to know when to schedule trimming of trees and shrubs at the appropriate time of the year.
  • • Ability to effect minor repairs to sprinkler systems to include pumps, lines, and sprinkler heads.
  • • Ability to work from ladders or trees in a safe and efficient manner.
  • • Must be able to assume responsibility and follow both written and oral instructions.
  • • Ability to work well with others.
  • • Must have a proper Florida Commercial Driver's License with endorsements compatible with the assigned duties of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • • This position will include pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • • Computer skills as required for the position. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Bilingual skills.

SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose

Majority of contact is with employees within the department utilizing communication skills requiring tact and courtesy to give or receive information directly related to performing the job.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
