BENEFITS ACCOUNTANT

POSITION GOAL
To plan and carry out broad assignments, with responsibility for recommending changes in accounting methods and procedures, working with general supervision but with some latitude for independent actions or decisions.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Benefits Accountant shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below.
- Assist in the preparation and coordination of monthly and annual financial statements and reports to the State and Federal Government, the Board and management.
- Assist internal and external auditors during the performance of their audits.
- Prepare monthly analysis of all revenue and certain expense accounts, work papers and schedules.
- Review journal entries to update general ledger for salaries and fringe benefits.
- Maintain records of Board's ledger share for fringe benefit rates and change them accordingly.
- Coordinate the collection of monies receivable for overpayments, reimbursable salaries, etc.
- Instruct or assign work to bookkeepers, accounting clerks, and other employees engaged in general accounting activities.
- Determine requirements for daily cash flow.
- Maintain records of all special projects.
- Assist Project Administrators and personnel with problems relating to their project.
- Prepare budget and amendments for Special Projects.
- Prepare district Indirect Cost Plan and State Cash Advance Status Report.
- Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
- Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
- Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
- Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
- Follow federal and state, as well as School Board policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
• An earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience and/or training in the field related to the title of the position.
OR
• Three (3) years’ experience within the Budget, Accounting, or Management Audits Department of the Broward County Schools.
• Computer skills as required for the position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- A certificate in public accounting or management accounting and public school experience preferred.
- Experience preferably in a governmental agency.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose
Instruct and assign work to bookkeepers, accounting clerks, and other employees engaged in general accounting activities. Communicates and provide assistance as necessary to internal and external auditors and other project administrators.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently as needed to move objects.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
