
POSITION GOAL
The Broward County School Police Sergeant, under the command of the Chief of Police, provides leadership, supervision, and operational oversight to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and school facilities. This position is responsible for directing and supporting police department staff in enforcing laws, district policies, and safety protocols within an educational environment while fostering an environment that supports both mental and physical health. The Sergeant promotes a culture of trust, accountability, and proactive problem-solving while ensuring professionalism, integrity, and adherence to district standards.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The Sergeant, shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below:
- Supervise staff as assigned in the performance of job duties.
- Support the Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness Division by providing Broward County School District with on-site professional safety and security and law enforcement services.
- Perform all functions of a sworn law enforcement officer in compliance with F.S. 943.10 and F.S.1006.12.
- Develop and implement performance evaluations for assigned staff, including coaching and mentoring to support career development.
- Ensure compliance with constitutional policing standards, use-of-force policies, and ethical conduct guidelines.
- Serve as Incident Commander during critical events in accordance with the Incident Command System/National Incident Management System (ICS/NIMS) protocols.
- Monitor officer wellness and provide referrals to Employee Assistance Programs when needed.
- Analyze crime trends and school safety data to inform proactive strategies and resource deployment.
- Participate in community engagement initiatives and problem-oriented policing strategies beyond traditional enforcement.
- Coordinate and deliver structured in-service training for subordinates on legal updates, de-escalation, procedural justice, crisis intervention and others as designated by the Chief of Police.
- Assist in budget planning and resource allocation for safety and security operations.
- Protect and secure the school site and occupants during on or off campus school activities that occur before or after normally scheduled hours.
- Perform the duties of a School Safety Officer in the absence of or to supplement a School Safety Officer coverage.
- Manage job performance and address concerns raised by assigned staff.
- Participate in the Behavioral Threat Assessment and Suicide Risk Assessment processes, as required.
- Develop, organize and maintain department training records.
- Promote positive interaction and enhance relations between students and law enforcement by enhancing the students’ knowledge of law enforcement structure, concepts and functions.
- Provide assistance and support to crime victims within the school setting.
- Provide educational programs and instructional activities to students concerning crime prevention and of their rights, obligations and responsibilities.
- Provide assistance related to the Florida School Safety Risk Assessment Tool.
- Serve as a liaison to law enforcement agencies and community agencies that have a mutual interest and concern for the safety and security of the District for the area in which they are assigned and directed by the immediate supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- An earned associate degree or minimum of 60 credit hours with evidence of successful completion of college level courses in one of the following: criminal justice, criminology, public administration, psychology, education, social work, law enforcement or public safety related field from an accredited institution.

A minimum of eight (8) years of experience as a sworn law enforcement officer with at least two (2) of those years in a supervisory role as a Sergeant or above.
OR
- A minimum of twelve (12) years as a sworn law enforcement officer.
AND
- Currently hold and actively maintain a valid certificate of compliance for Law Enforcement Officers in good standing from the State of Florida Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Training.
- Current School Board employees must hold permanent status and not be in probationary status.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Prior experience working with students or adolescents.
- Effective verbal and written communications skills, in order to work with all levels of District and school-based staff, parents’ students, community representatives and law enforcement agencies.
- Prior experience preparing thorough documentation with a demonstrated ability to produce written reports, under strict timelines, that are clear, concise, and thorough; ability to clearly and accurately communicate facts of case.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly and accurately communicate facts during criminal or administrative proceedings.
- Computer skills as required for the position, to include Microsoft Office.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- An earned bachelor’s degree or higher in criminal justice, criminology, public administration, law enforcement or related field from an accredited institution.
- Knowledge of the Incident Command System and other nationally mandated coordination and collaboration strategies, policies and procedures for emergency planning, preparedness, management and response.
- Advanced law enforcement certifications and training in the area of School Resource Officer courses.
- Bilingual skills.

Frequently works with staff, at all levels, throughout the District; students, parents, community, and law enforcement personnel to ensure the safety and security of District students, staff, stakeholders and sites
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Heavy Work: This position requires exerting substantial physical effort, including lifting, carrying, or assisting individuals or objects weighing 135 pounds or more. Employees must be able to perform these tasks safely and meet all physical demands of the role.
Must be able to perform physically demanding law enforcement tasks, including:
Running short and long distances during foot pursuits.
Climbing over and around obstacles.
Dragging or carrying individuals or objects weighing 135 lbs. or more during emergency situations.
Applying physical control techniques to restrain resisting subjects.
Maintaining cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength consistent with Broward College Criminal Justice Institute/Police Academy Physical Ability Test standards.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the School District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School Board.
Completion of a recognized law enforcement line-supervision class, within six (6) months of promotion unless, due to the unavailability of the class, the Chief of Police extends the required time frame by six (6) additional months.
